OALDの言い方がちょっとおもしろかったのでメモ。
２番目の定義ではあるけどね。
the mark ( ’ ) used before or after the letter ‘s’ to show that something belongs to somebody, as in Sam’s watch and the horses’ tails
「used before or after」ってなんだよ、とか一瞬思いそう＾＾。
例文を見れば「ああ、そういうことね」とすぐ解決するわけだけど。
ちなみに1番目の定義はこんな感じ。
the mark ( ’ ) used to show that one or more letters or numbers have been left out, as in she’s for she is and ’63 for 1963
そして3番目がこんなの。
the mark ( ’ ) used before the letter ‘s’ to show the plural of a letter or number, as in How many 3’s are there in 9? and There are two m’s in ‘comma’.
ところで『ランダムハウス英和大辞典』の定義も面白かったな。

省略を示すアポストロフィーには、「発音するもの」と「発音しないもの」があるとする説明だ。そんな風に考えたことがなかった。
